This behemoth is replacing my Tacoma as the trailer-hauling truck. It’s a 2000 Yukon XL, and it’s PRISTINE. Guy who we bought it from was a car guy, and took amazing care of his cars. In his garage was an E46 M3 convertible that looked showroom new. It was absolutely perfect.
Everyone needs to drive one of these at some point. It’s massive, and the length of a bus, but it still feels controllable and easy to maneuver. Maybe that’s just because I learned to drive in a Silverado of the same vintage.
As for doing its job, admittedly it doesn’t have the sheer power of the Tacoma (the supercharger seems to actually give a damn now that I’m at sea level) but it also isn’t having to try as hard. We’re definitely getting better mileage, and the 50% bigger tank is a big plus, too. It’s not hard to beat 8mpg on a 20 gallon tank.
Plus, it’s the world’s most versatile vehicle. It can hold approximately 20 people, or you can take the third row out and fold the second row flat to have nearly a quarter mile of cargo space. Or, if you get drunk enough one night, you can sign it up for an autocross, because this thing actually handles very decently. (mad decently, even).
Sure, you can’t hit speed bumps at 70mph like you can in the Tacoma, or carve corners QUITE like the BRZ, but it does ride better than the Subaru and handle better than the Taco, so it’s really all about how you frame it.
And, considering that pretty much every other truck that we looked at in this price range was a rusted out piece of shit with varying levels of frame damage and a year’s production worth of Bondo between them, it’s an amazing bargain. Now to talk “the boss” into using the several hectares of surface area for some nifty vinyl advertisements.

I would definitely rather tow with the Yukon than the Taco. My neighbor had a Suburban of the same vintage...watch out for rust in the future (especially in the mid-central-north-east-ish part of the country).

Nice! It seems you now have a pretty awesome, do anything garage combo. The BRZ for fun, Yukon for practicality. Anyway, congratulations on the new vehicles!

Oh man am I glad mine isn’t two-tone. I have those same ugly rims on mine as well except my GMC logos are chrome not red.
Good buy though! Be prepared to fix all the stupid little parts like wheel speed sensors and burnt out DRLs that are kind of cheaply made.

Easy to maneuver? I spent multiple hours wrestling one of things to go straight down a highway.

You may have had one with alignment/suspension issues. This one tracks straight as an arrow.

Would consider a suburban / Yukon as wife replacement vehicle.

I will be honest: I’m not sure it can perform all the standard wife duties.
It’s comfortable and supportive, sure, but it can’t cook for shit and its witty dialogue is sorely lacking.

Well you haven’t had my wife’s cooking.
But that came out wrong, “wife’s vehicle replacement.”
I had a 90 suburban at 19. Yep you can guess what happened in that thing.

I'm not going to rule that out or the wind that night. I don't have a large sample size to go from

Pre-industrial sailors used to hoist Yukons up to get an extra boost from the wind, so I wouldn’t doubt the wind angle.

I once drove a 1997 GMC suburban 2500 SLT. it was the old, boxy body style. at 65, I was using all my wits to keep it going straight. down a long hill on the freeway, it got to 90, and I was shitting my pants. when the drive was over, I wanted one still. nothing beats a big old American BOF SUV

“You can’t fight internet people until you’ve done your chores.”

Nice truck. The two tone looks good. Never owned a Yukon of that era but I have lots of experience with the newer Tahoes. Great truck all around. Should serve you well

Good points, wrong body style. They stopped running the 454s in ‘99.
